The Kirk Gibson Foundation for Parkinson’s has issued grants to the following organizations and programs:

Michigan Parkinson Foundation

The grant award will be utilized to expand MPF’s ability to offer in-person PWR! Moves and Boxing/High Intensity Interval Training classes throughout the state of Michigan free of charge for individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease. This grant will also be used to support the ongoing Respite Care Assistance program which helps families and care partners get the support and relief needed to go on caring for their loved ones.

Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research

This grant will continue to support the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) which is a multi-year natural history study of 4,000 participants to assess progression of clinical features and imaging as well as biologic biomarkers in various populations. The primary objective of this study is to collect and examine clinical and biologic measures to track disease progression across the spectrum of PD beginning with the prodromal stage of disease.

Corewell Health Foundation

The grant award will support the EvsP (Everybody vs. Parkinson’s) program which provides Parkinson’s patients with weekly movement and speech therapy classes, with the goal of treating symptoms and delaying disease progression through consistent exercise.

Yoga Moves MS

Grant funding will be used to administer an Adaptive Yoga Moves Any Body in-person class for individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease in Southfield, Franklin, or Farmington Hills. Yoga Moves PD classes integrate breathing and mindful practices with movement and yoga poses that meet the student in their present state of being, strengthening the individual mind-body connection as well as providing a peer support group and relationships with other adults living with PD.

Parkinson’s Movement Center

Support for establishing and administering a Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR! Moves) class for 20 individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease in the Farmington Hills area. PWR! Moves is a Parkinson’s-specific exercise program that works to improve neuroplasticity and slow the progression of Parkinson’s Disease. Focused on large movements, PWR! Moves targets four critical skills the disease attacks: antigravity extension, weight shifting, axial mobility, and transitional movements.

Take Root, Inc.

Grant funds will be used to expand Take Root’s Dance for Parkinson’s Disease classes to an additional location in order to offer a space for those living with PD, their spouses and caregivers, to connect, build self-confidence and invest in movement through creativity and music. Dance for Parkinson’s classes are based on physical PD needs; gait, balance, strength, spinal alignment and also mental aspects such as depression and isolation.

Uncorked Adventures NFP
